Thinking of getting a garden fireplace? Read my review of the Gardeco Sven chiminea fireplace.
We’ve had a heatwave for weeks, so I’ve been making full use of my garden. We’ve made an outdoor dining room area, complete with piano-turned-bar, swing chair, barbecue and… now an awesome fireplace!
I was recently sent this fab Gardeco Sven Chiminea Fireplace to review and we’ve loved putting it through it’s paces.
Top with fire cutouts
Bottom with main opening and four small holes on each side
2 x side brackets to hold cooking grill
1 x other bracket (I never did figure out what this one is for!)
4 x nuts and bolts
Grill removal handle
Out of the box it was easy to put together. The top and bottom come separately, so you fit the smaller top on – it took rather a bit of wiggling, but only took a few minutes. Next you need to screw the side plates with the supplied screws, then just set the grill onto the side plates. There’s also a wooden handled ‘fork’ to move the hot grill if necessary. It came with a third long bracket of a slightly different shape, but we never did figure out what it was for. Also, each side has four holes, so presumably the larger holes are for ventilation.
All in all it was quick and pretty self explanatory how to put it together. It looks nice and seems sturdy. I’ll get a cover for it to protect it from the winter elements and I’m sure that will keep it lasting well for years.
Mine arrived looking a bit different to the one on the Chiminea Shop website – not that that’s a bad thing, just a surprise. Rather than being all black, it has a black/copper streaked finish with decorative fire cutouts in the front. The one on the website appears to have a wood handled crank in the side. Mine doesn’t have that (although a hole is there).
It’s pretty self explanatory how to use it – just add firewood or charcoal to the bottom, light it and enjoy!
What makes it so special? Well, it’s not just a fireplace, but you can also barbecue on it! It comes with charcoal and barbecue grills, so it can double up as a compact BBQ oven.
Using the Gardeco Sven Chiminea Fireplace
It has a contemporary modern looking design with an A-shape frame and cutouts on the front. It’s also got a wide mouth area, so you have plenty of room to both cook in it, but also to watch the flames when using it as a fireplace.
We fired it up in the evening when we had friends over for a barbecue and the kids all loved toasting marshmallows in it. Previously we had used a stone fire circle in the garden, but with this heatwave my garden is parched so it’s too dangerous to use.
However this fireplace definitely feels much safer and we were able to put it onto a concrete paved area so they were able to get toasting! It was easy to light and really pumped out the heat quickly.
The grill for cooking is a great way to make use of all that heat. You can’t adjust the height of the grill, so make a hot fire, let the flames die down a lot, then keep the hot logs low along the base. It would be great to make foil packet meals in the chimnea or use a heatproof dish to make my lentil stew or peanut stew – both tasty meals, easy to make, quick to cook and delicious in the great outdoors.
