Enter to win two cases of Hofmeister Beer worth £48. Each case of the Bavarian Helles lager contains 12 bottles of the premium beer. Plus, it’s vegan!
To celebrate Hofmeister’s UK relaunch, I’ve teamed up with them on a giveaway. They’ve provided two cases of lager for one lucky reader!
Do you remember the Hofmeister adverts from the 80’s? The brand was famous for the cool and loveable Bavarian ‘George the Bear’ and the adverts that said “for great lager, follow the bear”. Ah, those were the days when it was acceptable to use a cuddly toy as an alcohol mascot!
Well, after a 13 year hiatus, Hofmeister is back! But not as you know it…
Hofmeister genuine Helles lager is vegan and made using only hops, barley and mineral water. It’s had a makeover from it’s original incarnation as a 3.2% ABV pale lager. Now it’s been turned into a 5% ABV Helles lager. It’s slow-brewed in Germany by a fourth generation family-owned brewery located on the edge of Eberberger Forest in Bavaria.
Yup, you read it right: Hofmeister is back. And it’s bigger, better, Bavarian-er than ever before. Slow-brewed in Germany and crafted according to the 1516 Reinheitsgebot Beer Purity Law, we think our genuine Bavarian Helles is the best lager you can get your paws on. For Great Helles Lager, Follow The Bear.
It’s light in colour but full of flavour. I really enjoyed the deep taste that’s full but not overpowering. It’s a lovely balance of depth of flavour and drinkability. It’s also great that it’s vegan.
You’re probably thinking “how can lager NOT be vegan? What would they be putting in there, fish bladders?” Erm, yeah, they are. Shudder.
Well, as odd as it is, many lagers aren’t vegan and they aren’t even veggie. Isinglass is a fancy name for fish bladders and many lagers are filtered through it to remove traces of yeast. Yup, yuck. I picture rows of factory workers hunched over pouring bottles of ale through teeny tiny little fish bladders, but presumably the practise is a bit different to that. Either way, it’s gross.
If you want to make sure your booze is vegan and vegetarian, check out Barnivore for a comprehensive list.
Hofmeister recommends “Serve chilled and pour it the Bavarian way – slow then fast- and you’ll enjoy subtle hoppy aromas, gentle carbonation and a generous foamy head. Prost!”
