As soon as Salter sent me this Heston Blumenthal Precision baking kit, the first thing I unpacked was this amazing set of scales. Why, oh, why, did I make do with my rubbish little set of scales for so long? The Heston scales are sleek, accurate, come in a lovely little storage box and is absolutely perfect for baking. I am delighted that I’ve been able to test out these scales. They have two weighing platforms, the first stainless steel one is for larger capacities and goes up to 10kg, while the smaller one weighs smaller measures precisely, up to 200g. The increments are tiny, so I know you’ll find yourself weighing individual grains of rice (not that I, erm, did that). This is very useful for small and light items and means that you don’t have to keep two sets of scales.
Heston Blumenthal Precision stands for accuracy and creativity in baking and these scales fit the bill. I grew up in Canada where measurements in baking are generally volume – in cups. But baking is so much more accurate when the ingredients are weighed. With these genius scales, you can just set your mixing bowl onto the platform and weigh your first ingredient, set the scale again and add the next. No need for extra bowls to wash up.
Salter have provided an entire baking kit for one lucky winner. This set is amazing quality. The whisk is large and strong. I whisked up some hot milk with turmeric, cardamom and black pepper last night when I was feeling a bit poorly and it frothed it up beautifully in seconds – next trial: meringue! The spatula set are fantastic as well. The silicone can withstand high temperatures, so I stirred my garlic sauteed kale with the large one and not only does it work well – it feels oddly like stirring with a dolphin flipper! And that is magic.
